New Athletic Director Monica Barrett said she does not plan to make major changes to the current program but hopes to bring more attention to the more unnoticed sports, such as swim and dive and cross country.
Two months into her new position, she said she also plans to install stricter policies on music and dress code for athletes. The former Cactus Shadows High athletic director and vice principal replaces Mr. Mike Mahon, who after five years resigned last spring to teach overseas.
Appropriate music is not a new feature to the athletic program, but Mrs. Barrett said she will require that all music played for sporting events is rated “G” to ensure that no spectators are offended during warm ups.
The dress code, similar to last year’s, requires that all athletes are to be in full uniform before arriving at the competition site. Athletes may wear any shoes before events as long as they are appropriate and approved by the coach, she said.
“It is not okay to look like you just came home from the beach or working out in your backyard,” she said.
Mrs. Barrett worked at Cactus Shadows for 18 years as the vice principal and later as the athletic director. She resigned from Cactus Shadows in October 2008 and began volunteering full time with Special Olympics, specifically for a branch called Project Unified that pairs Special Olympics athletes with high school athletes. For 24-40 hours a week, she volunteered as the Unified Sports Consultant, coaching and supporting teams such as cheer, tennis, track and flag football.
