Saints garner 10 region, 6 state titles

The Saints had another solid year in the 4A-II conference, winning six state and 10 regional titles total.
This year’s seniors can be proud of the 23 banners won over the course of their four years.

Fall
Football
The Varsity Football team fell short in the first round of the playoffs to Tuscon Santa Rita, who the Saints beat in the 2008 season to win the 4A-II title.
Swim
The Boys’ team finished third in the state competition, which saw seven school records broken by NDP athletes. Junior Alex Brouwer broke three school records in the 200 Individual Medley and the 50 and 100 meter freestyles. Junior Ben Brouwer broke two school records in the 200 freestyle and the 500 meter freestyle.
The girls’ team finished second in state competition. Alexis Daswick broke two of her own school records in the 200 IM and the 100 meter backstroke. Golf **
The Boys’ Golf team won the state championship for the third year in a row, beating Seton Catholic by one stroke.
The Girls’ Golf team won the state championship as well, going back to back in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team had a strong year in an even tougher region. Highlights of the season include winning the Marana Tournament in Tuscon. The team loses seven seniors but hopes to gain depth from a talented Junior Varsity squad.
Cross Country
The Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams were both region champs under region coach of the year Bruce Kerr. Each team had three top-10 finishers, all of whom earned medals.
Winter
Basketball
The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team won 12 games this season, while losing 16. The team began the season with a new head coach, Mr. Chris Stark, who formerly was head coach at Buckeye Union High School for five years.
At the banquet for basketball on Feb. 22, Senior Wil Barton was honored as MVP, Junior Joey Sheridan earned Most Improved Player, Senior Jack Donovan won the Matt Arnold Award, and Senior Will King won the Coach’s Award.
The NDP Varsity Girls Basketball team finished its season with a record of 18-13 and lost in the first round of the state tournament Feb. 17 in Page.
Soccer
The Boys’ Varsity Soccer team finished its season with a school-best record of 9-4. The team went on to compete in the playoffs, winning its first game 4-1 against Washington before losing in penalty kicks to Amphitheater. The Girls’ Varsity soccer team’s season ended after losing 1-0 to Palo Verde in the first round of the playoffs.
Spirit Line *
NDP Cheer and Pom teams won four titles at state, and the Cheer team went on to be the runner-up in national competition to conclude their winter competitions.
Wrestling
Senior Anthony Haechler placed sixth in the state wrestling championships for his weight division of 130 pounds on Feb. 11-12 in Prescott.
Junior Kodey Jones finished with 34 wins and 13 losses. He placed in three tournaments this winter as well.
Hockey *
The NDP Varsity Hockey team became state champions for the third time in four years after defeating the Brophy Broncos 7-1 in the championship game, the Saints wre led on the ice by captain John St. Thomas and by goalie Taylor Quinn.
Cycling
NDP Cycling ended its season on a high note. Sophomore Nick Thorpe placed first in the men’s junior category for the State of Arizona Bicycle Association at the National Championship Sea Otter Race.
Chess
Junior John Gurczak finished seventh in the state in AIA Chess competition.
During the fourth round of state individual competition, Gurczak and the other top eight players all drew in a stalemate.
Spring
Lacrosse
The Girls’ Lacrosse team set a school record for wins in a season this year, earning eight regular season victories.
Boys’ Lacrosse had another solid year under captains Ben Gassmann and Brian Simpson. The team won 11 of their 13 regular season games and is set to compete for the state title against Catalina Foothills on May 14.
Softball
The Varsity Softball team had multiple coaching changes this year and managed to post an impressive region record of 7-3. The team loses one senior, Dara Francis, so they are in line to have an experiencd varsity team next year.
Boys’ Volleyball
The Boys’ Varsity Volleyball made its way to the state quarterfinals, where it fell to Catalina Foothills, 16-25, 16-25, 17-25
The team regular season record was 11-4.
Tennis *
The Girls’ Varsity Tennis team concluded its undefeated season with a record of 14-0 after defeating Maricopa 9-0 on April 16. They went on to win state, defeating Buckeye 5-0 in Glendale May 8.
The Boys’ Tennis team ended its season with a record of 10-4 after a 9-0 defeat of the Coronado Dons. They almost advanced to the semifinals, taking No. 1- ranked Mingus to the last set in the playoff match and lost 5-4.
Baseball
Boys’ Varsity Baseball continued its season with a 9-0 defeat of Higley on April 27. The team had a record of 15-4 going into playoffs but came up short in the quarterfinals against Desert Edge May 12. The No. 1-ranked Saints lost to No. 8 Goodyear 10-8.
Track
After winning the state championship last year, Boys’ Track followed up this year by winning the region title. The Girls’ team won its first region title as well. Both teams will return multiple athletes next year after competing in the state tournament May 14 and 15.
