Notre Dame returned victorious from the final meet of the WordMasters Challenge, with the eleventh grade team placing third in the nation and the twelfth grade team placing first in the nation.
The WordMasters Challenge is a program that encourages attentive reading and sensitivity to language. Students that participate read literature that runs the gamut, from the renowned Renaissance poet William Shakespeare to the Times critic James Poniewozik. The challenge stresses that although there are many differences within the wide variety of literary works, all are overshadowed by the particular style of the author. Students use close reading to glean the most insight possible into a work and answer questions to reinforce these conclusions. For this final WordMasters meet, the texts read by eleventh and twelfth graders were a short story by Alan Gurganus and a poem by Elizabeth Bishop.
Notre Dame’s standings after the competition were impressive. Junior Payton Goett ranked amongst the top eleven eleventh graders in the country in terms of year-long achievement, and junior Chase Fauer was one of nineteen eleventh graders in the country that had perfect scores. Likewise, seniors Jenna Anderson and Kaitie Dougherty were part of the eleven twelfth graders to earn perfect scores.
Other members of the team included juniors Payton Goett, Tyler Laferrierre, Elena Batista-Hobin, and Nida Raja, and seniors Jessica Pruett, Mary Curtin, Dalton Hillman, Michelle Towers, and Natalie Ault. In the nationwide competition, the eleventh grade members placed amongst the top 73 eleventh graders, and the twelfth grade members placed amongst the top 78 twelfth graders. The WordMasters meet included 50,000 students from both the United States and three foreign countries.
